Features that allow you to set Messenger for minimal intrusion

Can I let people add me without approving each one?

You can set Messenger to require authorisation when another user adds you to their contact list. You will be sent a request for authorisation, and will not appear on that person’s list until you have approved the request.

How can I stop new messages opening new windows?

By default, new messages automatically open up new conversation windows when you are online. However, checking the ‘Queue Messages’ box (in the Messenger application window) will hold them in the contact list until you manually open them. You will then need to click on ‘Get next message’ in the conversation window to read the message.

NB: messages are always queued when you are away, and normally queuing is turned off when you go back online. However, if you had queuing turned on before you went away, queuing will not be turned off when you go back online.

Can I make myself available to a few top contacts but not to everyone on my contact list?

The visibility options (visible and hidden) allow you to display different presence states to different contacts.

This is the instant messaging equivalent to call screening. It’s useful if you have a small number of contacts who always need to get in touch with you, but sometimes wish to ‘screen out’ messages from other contacts.

You assign your top contacts to a visibility list so that they can always see your true status. You can then ‘hide’ (go ‘invisible’) from everyone else (who see you as ‘offline’).

You can edit the visibility list at any time by clicking on the 'View Visibility List' button on the Messenger application window.

What if I don’t want anyone disturbing me for a while?

If you don’t want anyone to try to contact you but do wish to remain online, set your status to ‘away’ and type in an appropriate message.
